Coin Specific Counterfeit Articles

Shield - Counterfeit Likeliness: Low

The few counterfeits that exist are contemporary in nature and easy to detect.

Liberty - Counterfeit Likeliness: Low

The most popular forgery in this rarely counterfeited series is the easily detected 1913 which is usually the result of an altered 1910. The 1885 is rarely counterfeited. The 1912-S was made with the same mint mark as the 1909-S VDB cent (square and boxy with a notch in the upper serif and a lump in the upper loop).

Buffalo - Counterfeit Likeliness: Average

Always be aware of added mintmarks on all coins from 1918 to 1927. 1913-1917 - the mint mark punches are the same as the 09S VDB and 1916D dime. 1917-late 20's - Mint mark is taller and thinner.

Jefferson - Counterfeit Likeliness: Low

Contemporary counterfeits and a contemporary fantasy 1944 plain (no P) exist. Made to look worn these are easy to detect.
