Complete US Mint Year Set (Foreign and Domestic) – 1918

There were 18 domestic coins issued for this final war year, 13 coins for other countries, and only three pattern coins, making this rival 1917 for being one of the smallest year sets to acquire. The price of gold remained stuck in a rut. For the fifth year it was recorded as constant at $18.99 as the government worked its magic to artificially keep gold steady. The price of silver continued to react to war needs rising 13%, the fourth year in a row of double digit rises to an average of $1.019 for the shiny metal. That is up from $.503 just five years earlier.

Mississippi became the first state to ratify the 18th amendment (prohibition). President Wilson issued his 14 point plan for ending WWI, while Hoover asked Americans to go without meat and bread for periods of time as a symbol of doing their part in the war effort. Thankfully, the war to end all wars ended November 11th.
