Complete US Mint Year Set (Foreign and Domestic) – 1936

Economically things looked pretty good in 1936. The DJIA gained 24% to add to the 37% gain of the prior year. This gave hope that the Depression was nearing an end. The official price of gold remained calm at $34.87 while silver, not artificially held up by governmental interference, dipped 22% giving a warning of problems to come.

The Baseball Hall of Fame began with inductions of Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson & Walter Johnson, and the NFL had its first draft as sports in America were thrust back onto the front page. The first stock car race was held in Daytona Beach and Jesse Owens lit up Germany with his efforts in the Olympic Games. In non-sports news, Margaret Mitchell published “Gone With the Wind,” and FDR won re-election in a landslide.

Numismatists had an equally good year. There was a full run of all coins at all mints, proofs were issued for the first time in 20 years, and 21 different commemoratives were issued. Yes, a good year indeed.
